Oh, this is just how I've been feeling whenever I notice that mass markets aren't being promoted or pushed because they're nearly a dinosaur. I blasted through four or five a week back in the day and it didn't break my savings account or take up too much space if I wanted to keep several for a re-read. And, it was my first of several genres and authors.
Thank you so much for acknowledging the loss of MMP’s. I was beginning to feel so alone in a book world where they were no longer existing. Still my favorite format of book to read.
My first was the infamous bodice ripper, Sweet Savage Love, when I was a teen in the 1970's. I think I may have picked it up in a used bookstore, looking for a historical saga LOL. Tbh though, these days I have wrist issues and don't read mass market paperbacks anymore. My Kindle has been a godsend but I still have a bookcase full of MMPs and I definitely felt a pang to read this.
Still remember my first romance at age 14 - Stranger In My Arms by Lisa Kleypas! Started my love for the genre. I have so old mass market paperbacks I've collected over the years!
My first romances were mass market paperbacks that I found at the free lending library at my hometown's public beach. I love them so much, they feel like collectibles. Now I'm determined to snag as many MMPBs from my favorite historical authors as possible — it's heartbreaking to think they won't always be available.
Yes!!! I also snagged a few at those. My first were "well loved" Anne Rice novels I picked up at garage sales. It's especially heartbreaking for the historical romance genre. We already lost the stepbacks, and now the format altogether.

I used to steal my mom's Harlequins--they were my gateway to romance. Mass markets were the first books I purchased.
I still have my mom's original copy of Peyton Place from the 60s. She had it hidden in the basement. I read it in middle school.
